Consumers Go Bananas For Fruity Gadget

Fruit lovers went bananas for a new gizmo advertised on a discount website.

Groupon almost bit off more than it could chew when its Banana Bunker sold like proverbial hot cakes. Banana fans in various countries couldn’t get enough of the hard plastic tubes, which protect bananas in transit. Within a short time of being offered on the site, the banana protector sold out leaving consumers begging for more. The adjustable tube has a ribbed collapsible midsection, which expands and contracts to fit bananas of all sizes and stops the soft fruit from getting bruised or crushed when carried around in backpacks or bags. Available in various colours, the protectors were sold singly or for an extra discount, people could snap up multiple containers.
Soon after being advertised, the suggestive-looking holder prompted a wave of fruity comments and jokes from a bunch of Facebook fans. Groupon’s social media team answered all the comments with hilarious and clever comebacks and the gadget went viral.

This was a great advertising boost for Groupon, which started offering daily deals in 2008. It now operates in more than 45 countries tempting consumers with discount coupons for goods, services, travel and activities. The Banana Bunker is probably its biggest social media success.
Bananas are said to be the most popular fruit in the world. More than 150 countries grow bananas, producing 105 million tonnes of fruit per year. The fruit is a good source of fibre, potassium and vitamin C and is a favourite energy-boosting snack. Did you know…?
  • * Bananas can help people feel happier because they contain tryptophan. This is a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, which makes you relaxed and improves your mood.
  • * The inside of a banana skin can be used to clean and shine shoes and make houseplant leaves shiny.
  • * The inside of the peel can also be rubbed on the skin to reduce the irritation of bug bites or poison ivy.
  • * It’s said that if you rub a banana peel on your forehead, it can help cure a headache.
  • * People have hailed the banana for getting rid of warts. Rub the inside of a small piece of banana peel on a wart every night and the potassium in the peel can make the wart disappear in a couple of weeks.
  • * Bananas are a great fertiliser because of their phosphorous and potassium content.
  • * The fruit is said to be a good teeth whitener. Every night, rub the inside of the peel on your teeth for two minutes. People have reported improvements in just two weeks.
