Helpful Sleeping Advice For Pregnant Women

7 - Avoid Sleeping on Your Stomach and Back

Sleeping on the back or stomach whilst pregnant isn't a good idea for a pregnant lady for a few reasons. Firstly, she just won't be comfortable. This is pretty self explanatory when it comes to sleeping on the stomach, not to mention putting pressure on the baby too. However, as the pregnancy goes on, sleeping on the back can cause the woman terrible back strain due to the weight of the baby. Secondly, pressure can also be put on a major vein (the inferior vena cava) which can interrupt the flow of blood to the heart. This can lead to the mother feeling light headed and numb. Finally, it's all about the mother and baby getting as much rest as they need, and sleeping on the stomach or back won't help either of them to achieve this. There are other positions that will help a pregnant woman find comfort.

6 - The Left Side is the Best Side

For a pregnant woman to be at her most comfortable whilst asleep, it is best for her to sleep on the left side of her body. Doctors recommend this side because the liver is on the right side of the body, so sleeping on the left can help to avoid putting pressure on this vital organ. It can also improve blood circulation to the heart, which means better blood flow to the baby and kidneys. Increased blood flow can also mean the legs are less likely to become swollen. Obviously, it's not as important for a woman to sleep on her left side during early pregnancy, but it is best if she gets used to the sleeping position as early as possible, especially if she is used to sleeping another way. This should make things easier for her as the pregnancy goes on.
