The genus curcuma, which is related to the ginger family, includes over 100 species. For centuries healers have used the roots of these plants to combat ailments and promote good health. Whilst the active ingredient, curcumin, can be found in all of these species, the most common of these in our diets is the ground root of curcuma longa, commonly known as turmeric. But what benefits are to be had from increasing your intake of curcuma?

1 - Feel Great!

Of course going out for a curry with your mates is bound to improve your mood, but could some of your uplifted spirits be due to the curcumin in the turmeric you have consumed? 2 - Combat Allergic Reactions

The active ingredient in curcuma, curcumin, has been found to inhibit cellular production of histamines. Whilst a certain amount of histamine helps your body, over production causes allergic reactions which can be debilitating and in some cases even fatal. Allergy related conditions such as eczema and asthma will be improved by the use of curcuma either in your diet or externally applied. Its action as an anti histamine and anti inflammatory help to prevent the swelling and constriction of the smooth muscles of the throat which are part of an asthma attack. It is considered beneficial for all kinds of allergies as it can help to negate the symptoms.
