The 10 Most Influential Women On Twitter

The power that celebrities have is phenomenal – and when it comes to social media the fairer sex has a huge influence. They use sites like Twitter to interact with their fans, convey information and to dispel rumors. Women are masters of the social media universe and their online presence is helping grow their popularity globally.
Huffington Post has compiled a list of the 100 most influential women on Twitter. Singer Katy Perry is the most followed Tweeter with 70 million fans - 10 million more than the Leader of the Free World, Barack Obama, but she only comes 17th. That’s because the ranking is not just about how big someone’s following is, but is based on their influence and how they engage with others to make an impact. The top 10 is not what you might expect. The winner is, drum roll please…

1. Britney Spears. Twitter handle: @britneyspears

The pop icon was just 16 when her song “Hit Me Baby One More Time” shot to number 1 in 1998 and as the saying goes, the rest was history. The fact that the American singer tops the girl power list on Twitter may surprise some because she is not in the limelight as much as she used to be. So what’s so special about Britney? She remains one of the most recognisable stars in the world and she uses vigorous viral marketing to strengthen her celebrity status. She stays in close touch with her fan base and interacts with them on a daily basis. She shares pictures of herself and her family, gives interviews and makes announcements through social media rather than mainstream media. This means her devoted 42 million fans get these important messages at the same time, if not before, official press representatives making them feel special. Her followers furiously retweet her posts, ensuring maximum coverage.
